In 2013 Southern California Edison (SCE) announced it would permanently retire the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) and begin the process of decommissioning the facility and restoring the land to its natural state.  In December 2016 SCE announced it had contracted with SONGSDS a joint venture between EnergySolutions and AECOM to decommission the facility.

The spent fuel has been relocated to an onsite ISFISI and decommissioning work is in full operation.  The first noticeable decommissioning project was the UNIT 1 Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) prepared and shipped to the EnergySolutions Clive disposal facility in the spring/summer of 2020.  Work continues and the project is expected to take ten years to fully decommissioning.
